Eduqas A Level Music (A660) 

The Eduqas A Level Music course is a dynamic and intellectually stimulating programme that, similar GCSE, integrates performing, composing, and appraising to deepen pupils’ understanding, evaluation and application of musical elements and context. Over the two years, pupils will engage in sophisticated exploration of theory, harmony and musical genres, refine their creative and compositional skills, and demonstrate advanced musical performance abilities. On the A Level course, pupils have the agency to showcase their specialisms regarding performance and composition, and the variety of different musical styles and periods.  This course prepares pupils for further education in music, future careers in music, or for those who enjoy music and wish to pursue it recreationally. 

To pursue A Level Music, pupils should:  

  • Receive weekly instrumental lessons on an instrument or voice, aiming to reach at least Grade 6 standard by upper 6th
  • Demonstrate proficiency in reading music notation. 
  • Achieve approximately Grade 5 standard in music theory (ABRSM). 
  • Actively participate and show advocacy to the school’s music activities. 
  • Display a broad interest in various musical genres. 

 

Course Content 

Performing (Option A: 35% or Option B: 25% of total marks) 

  • Option A (Performing Specialism): A recital of 10-12 minutes, including a minimum of three pieces. 
  • Option B (Composition Specialism): A recital of 6-8 minutes, including a minimum of two pieces. 
  • Performances are assessed by a visiting examiner. 

 

Composing (Option A: 25% or Option B 35% of total marks) 

  • Option A (Performing Specialism): Two compositions: One in response to an exam board brief and one free composition. Total duration 4-6 minutes. 
  • Option B (Composition Specialism): Three composition: One in response to an exam board brief and two free compositions. Total duration 8-10 minutes. 
  • Compositions are externally assessed. 

 

Listening and Appraising (40% of total marks) 

  • A 2-hour 15-minute listening/written exam. 

Questions cover three areas of study with set works plus tasks focused on melodic and rhythmic dictation and awareness.

  • The Western Classical Tradition: Development of the symphony from 1750 to 1900 with a set work. 
  • A choice of one: 
  • Rock and Pop. 
  • Musical Theatre. 
  • Jazz. 
  • A choice of one, with a set work: 
  • Into the 20th Century. 
  • Into the 21st Century.
