Match Teas – A Tradition of Sportsmanship and Friendship

At Hill House, sport is about far more than what happens on the pitch. An important part of every fixture is the chance for pupils, staff, and parents from both schools to come together afterwards, sharing refreshments and enjoying the spirit of the occasion.

Whether matches take place at the main school site or our nearby Sports Grounds in Blaxton, Hill House upholds a proud tradition of post-match hospitality. Visiting teams and their supporters are warmly welcomed with drinks and snacks, as well as hot food options – with sausage sandwiches being a particular favourite!

This practice has deep roots in British sporting culture, with sports such as hockey, rugby, and cricket long recognising the value of “tea” after a match. Far from being just a treat, these gatherings bring together young players and their families, offering the chance to relax, build friendships beyond their own team, and learn the true meaning of sportsmanship. Sharing food and conversation with visiting players reinforces teamwork, respect, and camaraderie – values at the heart of all Hill House sport.
