Lord of the Flies

After being unable to perform for so long, our Senior School pupils hit the Hill House stage with an action-packed performance of Nigel William’s dramatic adaptation of William Golding’s novel, ‘Lord of the Flies’. This well-known story offered audiences an opportunity to experience the harrowing and nerve-wracking journey of the characters as they attempt to navigate Golding’s nightmarish desert island. All of the pupils who took part really embraced their roles and immersed themselves in the dramatic and terrifying world of the play.

The original novel is written with an entirely male cohort (or cast). However, for our version we took inspiration from some of the more modern productions of this story, such as Emma Jordan’s 2018 all-female production, and decided to cast not based on gender. Audiences followed Poppy Bazlinton’s sensitive portrayal of Ruth (Ralph) as she encountered the dominant personality of Jack, played by Harry Russin. We waited with bated breath and nervous anticipation as ‘Piggy’, played by Gurveer Dhaliwal, attempted, but ultimately failed, to bring civilization to the group.

The production made use of naturalistic scenery and props, as well as some ambient and symbolic sound effects and lighting to enhance the key ideas and events in the play. Costumes, designed by Miss E Harper, and props, in particular our terrifying pig’s head designed and made by Mrs Laszkowicz, also complimented the nature of the characters on stage and helped to add dramatic impact for the audience.

Thanks go to every member of staff involved, as well as our sixth form assistant directors, Yuvan Rajasundaram, Evie Sprenger and Rebecca Leggott.

Our pupils now look forward to our whole school production of ‘Hairspray’ in the Summer term.
